Jeff Smith:Det här är en bra fråga. När du säger flexbränsle så kommer vi för denna diskussions skull anta att du menar E-85 som är 85 procent etanol och 15 procent bensin.

Som de flesta av våra läsare säkert är medvetna om, producerar etanol bara cirka 75 procent av värmen som samma mängd bensin. Därför, för att göra samma kraft (eller för att köra samma sträcka) måste motorn förbränna ungefär 25 procent mer bränsle. Detta har visat sig vara fallet i flera tester genom åren.

En flexbränslemotor måste konstrueras för att fungera på både bensin och etanol under ett brett utbud av blandningar. Den stora frågan handlar egentligen om oktantalet. Vi måste börja med några definitioner så att alla är på samma sida. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) satte nyligen en standard – D5798 för etiketten E-85 på pumpen som gör att detta bränsle kan innehålla någonstans mellan 51 procent och 83 procent etanol. Det stämmer, E-85 behöver bara vara så lite som 51 procent - beroende på geografisk plats och säsong.
