JP. A post-1720 registration not recorded by Grimwade Grimwade, Arthur - London Goldsmiths, 1697-1837: Their Marks and Lives, Faber & Faber, 1990; re-used his pre-1697 mark. Name also recorded as Penford. Mark also seen on Exeter silver before the Exeter assay office closed in 1882.

The London assay office is the oldest hallmarking authority in England, and the Leopard's head is one of the oldest authentication marks. First used in the 1300s by Edward I to protect gold and silver quality, the leopards head was used on all precious metals tested by the Goldsmiths' Company.
