The British pre-decimal halfpenny, (pronounced / ˈ h eɪ p ən i /), once abbreviated ob. (from the Latin 'obulus'), was a denomination of sterling coinage worth 1 / 480 of one pound, 1 / 24 of one shilling, or 1 / 2 of one penny.Originally the halfpenny was minted in copper, but after 1860 it was minted in bronze. In the run-up to decimalisation, it ceased to be legal tender from 31 July.

Pre Decimal Coin Sizes. Pre-decimal coin sizes were much larger than modern coins. The largest pre-decimal coin was the sovereign, which was 22.05 mm in diameter and weighed 7.98 grams. The half sovereign was 16.7 mm in diameter and weighed 3.99 grams. The shilling was 12.0 mm in diameter and weighed 2.83 grams.
