The Red Tailed Hawk is the largest of hawks, weighing an average of 1 to 2 kilos and reaching up to 65 cm in length. Its wingspan can reach up to 175 cm long.

The Rough-legged Hawk occurs throughout most of British Columbia, including southeastern Vancouver Island, as a migrant and winter visitant. North of 52o N this species becomes locally distributed and south of this latitude it occurs in the Kamloops-Douglas Lake region, Okanagan valley, Creston valley and Fraser Lowlands (Campbell et al. 1990).
