Kiholo Bay, Big Island, Hawaii. Kiholo Bay is a secluded black sand beach on the Big Island of Hawaii, which is accessed via a short 2 mile roundtrip hike just off Highway 19. From Kailua, drive north on Highway 19 past the airport and Kona Coast Park, watch for highway marker # 82 and the Kiholo Scenic Viewpoint, the trail will be on the ocean.

The hike to see this lava-rimmed bay is long and hot, so this is a good way to cheat and see it without all the extra work. The lava around the bay dates to the 1859 Mauna Loa lava flow.

Kiholo Bay is an astonishing hidden bay on the west coast north of Big Island. It is reached by a short walk along the ocean, at the end of which we discover the lagoon of Wainanalii of an incredible cyan color.

Built during the monarchy of King Kamehameha I in 1820, as an engineered fishpond, it spanned approximately 2 miles with a 6-foot high by 20 feet wide lava rock wall, protecting the bay from the ocean currents. In 1859, a lava flow from the Mauna Loa volcano, reached Kiholo Bay and devastated the southern portion of the ancient fishpond.
