Conques owes its origins to a hermit. A man named Dadon retired in this then wild place at the end of the 8 th century, in the aim of living a contemplative life. Other men full of piety joined him. The pious community kept growing in number and a first church dedicated to the St. Savour was built. The monastery adopted the rule of St. Benedict.
