He had decorated and furnished the Yellow House in preparation for his friend, and had his hopes pinned on establishing a joint studio and possibly even attracting other artists to the area.

Les Alyscamps by Vincent van Gogh was completed in 1888, and shows a view down the Allee des Tombeaux, the poplar-flanked path between rows of ancient sarcophagi, in which Vincent van Gogh portrayed two lovers taking a stroll. The woman in Les Alyscamps wears the distinctive local costume, while the man's uniform identifies him as a Zouave whose regiment was temporarily billeted in Arles.

The brushstrokes, copied from Cézanne, allowed him to transcribe the motif without imitating the real world. The highly saturated hues are also a subjective and decorative interpretation of the landscape. This serene view of Les Alyscamps contrasts with the tormented contemporary compositions that Van Gogh painted of the place.
