Het Fort bij Edam is onderdeel van UNESCO Werelderfgoed Hollandse Waterlinies. Deze forten werden ingericht om de hoofdstad te kunnen verdedigen tegen invasies door het omringende land onder water te laten lopen. Bovenal was Edam groots in scheepsbouw. Ooit telde Edam tussen de 30 en 60 bedrijven die zich bezig hielden met deze ambacht.
